Also / Too / Either

Step 1

Quick Look

Hindi has one ‘भी’; English splits it into three seats. ALSO sits mid-sentence, TOO sits at the end of positive sentences, and EITHER replaces too at the end of NEGATIVE sentences — the switch nobody teaches. Plus the reply pair: Me too (agreeing with a positive) and Me neither (agreeing with a negative).
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
ALSO — mid-sentence
before the main verb, after be/modals
He also owns a shop in Khurja. / She is also a director.
TOO — end, positive
He owns a shop in Khurja too. / I liked the corner unit too.
EITHER — end, negative
He doesn’t own a shop, and I don’t either. (NOT: I don’t too)

The golden rule: in a NEGATIVE sentence, TOO is banned from the end — EITHER takes its seat. ‘I don’t like it too’ is the classic error; ‘I don’t like it either’ is the fix. And the replies follow: positive agreement Me too; negative agreement Me neither.

Step 2

When to Use It

Wealsodealin leasingbefore the main verbSheisalsohandling…after be / modals
Use 1

ALSO — the mid-sentence ‘bhi’

Before the main verb; after am/is/are/was/were and modals.
  • We also deal in commercial leasing.
  • She is also handling the Meerut project.
  • You can also pay in two instalments.
POSITIVEThe location works, andthe price workstoo.END SEATMe too.
Use 2

TOO — the friendly ending

Positive sentences only; a comma before it is optional.
  • The location works, and the price works too.
  • I invited his partner too.
  • ‘I loved the terrace garden.’ — ‘Me too.’
NEGATIVEThe lift doesn’t work, andthe intercom doesn’teither.END SEATMe neither.
Use 3

EITHER — the negative ending

Where too cannot go.
  • The lift doesn’t work, and the intercom doesn’t either.
  • He didn’t attend the AGM, and his brother didn’t either.
  • ‘I don’t trust that agent.’ — ‘Me neither.’
THE FORMAL COUSINStoo=as wellMe too.=So do I.Me neither.=Neither do I.
Use 4

AS WELL and the formal cousins

As well = too (end position, slightly formal). So do I / Neither do I = polished replies.
  • We’ll need the society NOC as well.
  • ‘I have invested in Sector 10.’ — ‘So have I.’
  • ‘I haven’t seen the new circle rates.’ — ‘Neither have I.’
The reply pair: Me too · Me neither

Step 3

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
हिंदी का एक ‘भी’, English की तीन कुर्सियाँ:
ALSO बीच में बैठता है: वह दुकान भी चलाता है He ALSO runs a shop. (main verb से पहले; is/can के बाद: She is ALSO a partner)।
TOO आख़िर में, positive वाक्य में: मुझे भी पसंद आया
I liked it TOO.
Negative में too की जगह EITHER: मुझे भी पसंद नहीं आया I didn’t like it EITHER (‘didn’t like it too’ — India की classic ग़लती!)।
जवाबों की जोड़ी: ‘मुझे भी (हाँ वाला)’ Me too; ‘मुझे भी नहीं’ Me neither। और polish चाहिए तो: So do I / Neither do I।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
I don’t like this layout too.
I don’t like this layout either.
Negative sentence either at the end. The chapter’s whole reason to exist.
He also is coming to the site visit.
He is also coming to the site visit.
Also sits AFTER be/modals, before the main verb.
‘I can’t come on Sunday.’ — ‘Me too.’
‘I can’t come on Sunday.’ — ‘Me neither.’
Agreeing with a negative me neither.
Also I want to see the ground- floor unit.
I also want to see the ground- floor unit. / I want to see the ground-floor unit too.
Sentence-initial ‘Also,’ works only as a connector between sentences — inside one thought, keep it mid- position.
She didn’t sign, and her husband didn’t sign also.
She didn’t sign, and her husband didn’t (sign) either.
Negative tag-along either, not also.
‘I have never been to Dubai.’ — ‘So have I.’
‘I have never been to Dubai.’ — ‘Neither have I.’
Never = negative Neither have I.
Step 5

Signal Words

Seat map:
