Past Unreal Conditional (Third Conditional)

Intermediate–Advanced50 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

The Third Conditional is the grammar of regret and relief. It imagines a DIFFERENT past — something that did not happen — and its imaginary result. The past cannot be changed, so this conditional is 100% unreal by definition. Formula: If + Past Perfect, would have + V3.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Formula
If+had+V3, would have+V3
If we had launched last year, we would have beaten the competition.
Negative
If he hadn’t delayed, the deal would not have collapsed.
Question
What would you have done if the bank had refused?

The golden rule: both halves go TWO steps back. The if-clause takes had + V3 (Past Perfect, Module 1 Ch 9), and the result takes would have + V3. Neither half ever contains ‘would had’ or ‘had would’ — memorise the shape: If I HAD known, I WOULD HAVE told you.

Both halves look back at a past that did not happen, so the Third Conditional is always 100% unreal.
Step 2

When to Use It

IFI had boughtthat plotRESULTI would have made4× the money REALITYI didn’t buy itno 4× profit
Use 1

Regret — the past you wish you had

It didn’t happen; you wish it had.
  • If I had bought that plot in 2015, I would have made four times the money.
  • If we had hired a lawyer earlier, we would have avoided the dispute.
  • She would have cleared the interview if she had prepared for a week more.
IFwe had signed withthat builderRESULTwe would have losteverything REALITYwe didn’t signwe kept everything
Use 2

Relief — the disaster that didn’t happen

Something bad was avoided.
  • If we had signed with that builder, we would have lost everything.
  • If you had taken the highway that night, you would have been stuck for six hours.
IFthe material hadarrived as promisedRESULTwe would havedelivered on time REALITYit came latewe were late
Use 3

Blame and excuse

Assigning responsibility for past outcomes.
  • If you had told me the truth, I would have handled it differently.
  • We would have delivered on time if the material had arrived as promised.
IFhe had studiedcommerceRESULTwould havesure resultcould havemissed chancemight havemaybe
Use 4

Could have / might have in the result

Could have = missed ability or opportunity; might have = uncertain imaginary result.
  • If he had studied commerce, he could have joined the family firm.
  • If we had advertised more, we might have sold out in the first phase.
Two steps back from the real future

Hindi Concept Note

If I had bought that plot, I would have made crores.
अगर तुमने बता दिया होता, तो मैं आ जाता।
If you had told me, I would have come.
हिंदी पहचान: ‘होता / लिया होता / गया होता’ — past की ख़याली बात। English shape: had + V3 (if-clause) और would have + V3 (result)।
सबसे आम ग़लती से बचो: if-clause में would नहीं घुसता — ‘If I would have known’ ग़लत है, ‘If I had known’ सही।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
If I would have known, I would have come.
If I had known, I would have come.
The classic. Would never enters the if-clause — had + V3 only.
If she had knew the rate, she would have negotiated.
If she had known the rate, she would have negotiated.
Had + V3 (known), never V2 (knew).
If we had left early, we would reach on time. (past event)
If we had left early, we would have reached on time.
A past unreal result needs would have + V3 — ‘would reach’ points at the present/future instead.
If you had called me, I would have came.
If you had called me, I would have come.
Would have + V3 (come), not V2 (came).
If he studied harder, he would have passed. (talking about last year’s exam)
If he had studied harder, he would have passed.
Past regret needs Past Perfect in the if-clause — ‘studied’ alone makes it a Second Conditional about now.
I wish I would have bought it.
I wish I had bought it.
Same disease, wish version — preview of Chapter 9. After wish, use had + V3 for past regret.
Step 5

Signal Words

Third Conditional signals:
Regret words: kaash, unfortunately, sadly, if only (past reference)
A known past outcome being imagined differently
Hindi ‘liya hota / gaya hota / kiya hota’ pattern
could have / might have / would have in the result
