Module 2 · Conditionals
Future Real Conditional (First Conditional)
Step 1
Quick Look
The First Conditional talks about REAL future possibilities — things that genuinely might happen, and what will follow if they do. It is the conditional of plans, promises, warnings, and negotiations. Formula: If + Simple Present, will + base verb.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Formula
If+Simple Present, will+V1
If the client agrees, we will sign tomorrow.
Negative options
If he doesn’t call, I won’t wait. / Unless he calls, I won’t wait.
Result variations
will / can / may / might / should / imperative
If you’re free, join us. If it rains, we might cancel.
The golden rule (worth repeating until it’s automatic): the if-clause stays in SIMPLE PRESENT even though the meaning is future. ‘If it will rain’ does not exist in English. The will lives only in the result clause.
One fixed if-clause, many results
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
Real future possibilities and plans
The speaker believes this can genuinely happen.
- If the registry happens this week, we will release the payment.
- If I get the Gurgaon project, I will hire two more people.
- If the metro extension is announced, prices in that sector will jump.
Use 2
Promises, offers, and threats
Commitments tied to a condition.
- If you refer a buyer, I will share the brokerage.
- If you don’t submit the documents by Friday, the bank will reject the file.
- If you need help shifting, I will send my team.
Use 3
Warnings and advice
Often with imperatives or should in the result.
- If the dealer asks for cash, walk away.
- If the tenant delays rent twice, you should send a written notice.
- If it looks too good to be true, don’t sign.
Use 4
UNLESS = if not
One word replaces ‘if... not’. Never pair unless with another negative in the same clause.
- Unless the seller reduces the price, we will not proceed. (= If the seller does not reduce...)
- You won’t get possession unless all dues are cleared.
Use 5
Other condition words
as long as, provided (that), in case — all take the same present-tense rule.
- We will fund the project as long as the approvals are in place.
- Take my number in case you need directions.
- Provided the RERA registration comes through, we launch in March.
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
First Conditional असली future की बात है — जो सच में हो सकता है।
अगर वह मान गया, तो हम कल sign कर देंगे।
If he agrees, we will sign tomorrow.
हिंदी की सबसे बड़ी trap यहीं है: ‘अगर बारिश होगी’ — हिंदी में future (‘hogi’), पर English के if-clause में present: If it rains (NOT will rain)।
याद रखने का तरीक़ा: if-clause में will को घुसने ही नहीं देना। Will सिर्फ़ नतीजे (result) में रहता है।
UNLESS = ‘जब तक... नहीं’: जब तक तुम form नहीं भरोगे, काम नहीं होगा।
Unless you fill the form, the work will not happen.
The Hindi trap: future meaning, present form
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why
If the buyer will come tomorrow, we will show the flat.
If the buyer comes tomorrow, we will show the flat.
The #1 conditional error in India. If-clause = present, always.
If he don’t agree, we will find another dealer.
If he doesn’t agree, we will find another dealer.
He doesn’t. Subject-verb agreement inside the if-clause.
Unless you don’t hurry, you will miss the slot.
Unless you hurry, you will miss the slot.
Unless already contains ‘not’ — a second negative flips the meaning.
If it rains, we cancel the event tomorrow. (one-time future plan)
If it rains, we will cancel the event tomorrow.
A specific future decision needs will. (Plain present = Zero Conditional habit.)
If you will help me, I will help you.
If you help me, I will help you.
Even in ‘deal-making’ sentences, the if-clause refuses will.
We will proceed, unless the lawyer objects. (punctuation)
We will proceed unless the lawyer objects.
Result first no comma. Same comma rule as every conditional.
Step 5
Signal Words
First Conditional signals:
Future time words: tomorrow, next week, this Friday, soon
Deal language: if you..., I will... (offers, promises, warnings)
unlessas long asprovided thatin caseResult can also take can/may/might/should or a direct command
