Future Unreal Conditional

Advanced40 min25 questions8 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

The Future Unreal Conditional imagines future events the speaker considers unlikely, purely hypothetical, or too delicate to state directly. It borrows the Second Conditional’s machinery (past tense + would) and adds one elegant tool of its own: WERE TO — the polished, formal way to raise a hypothetical.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Basic form
If+Simple Past, would+V1
If the market crashed next year, we would hold our inventory.
WERE TO form
If+subject+were to+V1, would+V1
If the government were to change the policy, prices would correct.
Softening questions
What would you do if the partner were to exit?

The golden rule: same future, different belief. ‘If the market crashes, we will hold’ (First — realistic) vs. ‘If the market crashed / were to crash, we would hold’ (Future Unreal — I doubt it). WERE TO adds distance and formality — perfect for raising sensitive scenarios without sounding alarmed.

The further down you go, the less you expect it to happen, and the more distance and formality you add.
Step 2

When to Use It

LIKELYIMPOSSIBLEUNLIKELYIFthey doubled thecircle rate next yearRESULThalf the dealswould freeze
Use 1

Unlikely future events

Technically possible, but the speaker isn’t betting on it.
  • If they doubled the circle rate next year, half the deals would freeze.
  • If he resigned tomorrow, the whole project would stall.
  • If we got the entire floor at that price, I would take it without thinking.
WERE TOeveryday talkboardroom, contractIf the buyer were to default, the token amount would stand forfeited.
Use 2

WERE TO — formal, diplomatic hypotheticals

Boardrooms, contracts, negotiations. Raises a scenario without predicting it.
  • If the buyer were to default, the token amount would stand forfeited.
  • If we were to expand to Jaipur, which micro-market would you pick?
  • If the partnership were to end, the assets would be divided as per clause 7.
If I die…If anything were tohappen to me… too bluntgentler, politesame idea, softer words
Use 3

Delicate topics — softening the unthinkable

Were to lets you discuss death, failure, or loss politely.
  • If anything were to happen to me, this file has all the property papers.
  • If the company were to shut down, employees would get three months’ pay.
If I were to offer you 95 lakhs flat, would you close today??just testing · no commitment
Use 4

Advice and negotiation probes

Testing reactions without commitment.
  • If I were to offer you 95 lakhs flat, would you close today?
  • If we were to waive the parking charge, would that seal it?
WERE TO: the form and the short cut
ONE FORM FOR EVERY SUBJECTIfI · you · he · she · it · we · theyany subjectwere toV1,wouldV1was tonever was toFORMAL SHORT CUT: NO ‘IF’NORMALFORMALIf the buyer were to default, the deal would end. Were the buyer to default, the deal would end.drop ‘If’were goes first
Were to is the same for every subject, even I / he / she / it. The short cut (Were the buyer to default, …) is formal and never uses ‘if’.

The Three Futures — One Table

FormExampleSpeaker’s belief
First ConditionalIf prices fall, I will buy.Realistic — could well happen.
Future Unreal (past tense)If prices fell, I would buy.Doubtful — probably won’t.
Future Unreal (were to)If prices were to fall, I would buy.Purely hypothetical — formal, distant.
Moving down the table, the same event becomes less and less believed. Choose your row based on how likely YOU think it is — and how formal you want to sound.
Step 4

Hindi Concept Note

If the market crashed, we would hold our stock.
WERE TO = ‘अगर कभी ऐसा हो’ का formal रूप — बड़ी meetings और agreements की भाषा:
अगर ख़रीदार default कर जाए, तो token ज़ब्त हो जाएगा।
If the buyer were to default, the token would stand forfeited.
नाज़ुक बातों के लिए भी यही form: ‘अगर मुझे कुछ हो जाए...’ If anything were to happen to me... — सीधा ‘If I die’ बोलने से कहीं शालीन।
Step 5

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
If the market would crash, we would hold.
If the market crashed / were to crash, we would hold.
Would stays out of the if-clause — in every conditional, forever.
If he was to resign, the project would stall.
If he were to resign, the project would stall.
The construction is fixed: WERE to, for every subject — I/he/she/it included.
If prices were to fall, I will buy the whole floor.
If prices were to fall, I would buy the whole floor.
Were to commits you to the unreal family — the result takes would, not will.
If anything happens to me, this would be yours. (mixing)
If anything happened / were to happen to me, this would be yours.
Match the families: present + will (real) or past/were to + would (unreal).
If I would be you, I would wait.
If I were you, I would wait.
The Chapter 4 formula — never ‘would be’ in the if-clause.
Were the buyer to defaults, the deal ends.
Were the buyer to default, the deal would end.
Inverted formal style exists (Were the buyer to default...) — but the verb stays base form, and the result stays would.
Step 6

Signal Words

Future Unreal signals:
‘agar kabhi’ feeling — remotehypothetical future
were to + verb (formal, contracts, board language)
Negotiation probes: If I were to offer..., would you...?
Delicate subjects: if anything were to happen...
