Adjectives vs. Adverbs

Intermediate40 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Adjectives describe THINGS (a quick reply); adverbs describe ACTIONS (she replied quickly). Most adverbs just add -ly — but the exceptions are where fluent speakers are separated from the rest: GOOD vs. WELL, HARD vs. HARDLY (opposite meanings!), and the sense verbs (look, taste, feel) that take adjectives when everyone expects adverbs.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Adjective → thing
a fast decision, a careful lawyer, the report is good
Adverb → action
decide fast, read carefully, she negotiates well
The killer pair
hard = with effort (works hard) | hardly = almost not (hardly works) — OPPOSITES

The golden rule of sense verbs: look, sound, taste, smell, feel, seem describe the SUBJECT, not an action — so they take ADJECTIVES. The chai tastes sweet (not sweetly). You look tired (not tiredly). And ‘I feel bad’ is correct — ‘I feel badly’ would mean your fingers have lost the sense of touch.

Step 2

When to Use It

ADJcarefuldriverADVdrivescarefullynounverb
Use 1

The basic split

Ask what’s being described: the noun or the verb?
  • He is a careful driver. (describes driver adjective)
  • He drives carefully. (describes the driving adverb)
  • The offer was serious, and they negotiated seriously.
goodADJHer presentation wasgoodwellADVShe presentedwellwellHEALTHI’mwell, thanks.
Use 2

GOOD vs. WELL

Good = adjective; well = adverb (and ‘in good health’).
  • Her presentation was good. / She presented well.
  • He speaks English well. (NOT: speaks English good)
  • How are you? — I’m well, thanks. (health)
fastafasttrainrunsfastADJECTIVEADVERBhard · late · early
Use 3

The shape-shifters: fast, hard, late, early

Same word works as both adjective and adverb — no -ly needed.
  • a fast train the train runs fast (NOT fastly — the word doesn’t exist)
  • a hard negotiation he negotiates hard
  • a late payment they paid late
works hardgreat effort hardly worksalmost neverlate / lately · high / highly: new meanings
Use 4

The trap twins: hard/hardly, late/lately

Adding -ly creates a NEW word with a different meaning.
  • He works hard. (great effort) / He hardly works. (almost never — an insult!)
  • She came late. (after time) / She hasn’t come lately. (recently)
  • The site is high on the ridge. / The buyer is highly interested. (highly = very)

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
Adjective चीज़ को बताता है, adverb काम को: तेज़ गाड़ी a fast car; तेज़ चलाता है drives fast।
ज़्यादातर adverbs में -ly जुड़ता है: careful carefully। पर fast, hard, late, early वैसे ही रहते हैं — ‘fastly’ शब्द ही नहीं है!
GOOD बनाम WELL रट लो: काम अच्छा है The work is good; अच्छा काम करता है He works WELL (‘works good’ नहीं)।
जानलेवा जोड़ी: hard = मेहनत से (works hard = ख़ूब काम करता है); hardly = मुश्किल से/न के बराबर (hardly works = काम ही नहीं करता!) — एक -ly ने तारीफ़ को बेइज़्ज़ती बना दिया।
और sense verbs (look, taste, feel, smell) के बाद adjective: चाय मीठी लग रही है The tea tastes sweet (‘sweetly’ नहीं); तुम थके लग रहे हो You look tired।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
She sings very good.
She sings very well.
Singing is an action adverb well.
He drives very fastly on the expressway.
He drives very fast on the expressway.
‘Fastly’ does not exist — fast is its own adverb.
He hardly worked to build this company. (you meant: with great effort)
He worked hard to build this company.
Hard = effort; hardly = almost not. The -ly reverses your compliment.
This biryani smells deliciously.
This biryani smells delicious.
Sense verb adjective.
I feel badly about the cancelled deal.
I feel bad about the cancelled deal.
Feel (emotion) adjective. ‘Feel badly’ = damaged sense of touch.
