Module 5 · Articles & Prepositions
Zero Article & Advanced Article Use
Step 1
Quick Look
The third option nobody teaches: NO article at all — the ‘zero article’. General statements (Water is precious), most proper nouns (India, Diwali, Hindi), and the institution words (school, work, home, bed) all take nothing. This chapter also settles the country puzzle — why plain ‘India’ but ‘THE USA’ — and the special powers of the: the rich, the Ganga, the Himalayas, playing the tabla.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
General statements
plural or uncountable + general meaning ZERO article Water is precious. Plots appreciate faster than flats.
Institutions
school, work, home, bed, jail, court (as purpose) ZERO She went to work. He’s in jail.
The country rule
Plain names zero (India, Nepal). Names with Republic/States/Kingdom/plural the (the USA, the UAE, the Netherlands).
The golden rule of institutions: no article = the PURPOSE, the = the BUILDING. ‘He went to school’ = to study. ‘He went to THE school’ = walked to that building (maybe to meet the principal). Same pair: in bed (sleeping) vs. on the bed (sitting on it); in court (facing trial) vs. in the court (inside the room).
Where the zero article lives
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
General plurals and uncountables — zero
Talking about a thing in general, not specific ones.
- Prices depend on location. (prices in general)
- Honesty builds long-term clients.
- Buyers trust registered agents more. (buyers in general)
- But specific: THE prices in Sector 10 jumped. (which prices — known)
Use 2
Proper nouns — mostly zero
Names of people, cities, states, languages, festivals, months, subjects.
- Bharat lives in Ghaziabad and speaks Hindi and English.
- Diwali falls in October or November this year.
- She studied Economics in Meerut.
Use 3
The geography exceptions — the’s territory
Rivers, seas, oceans, mountain RANGES, deserts, and plural/united country names.
- the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean
- the Himalayas, the Aravallis (ranges) — but Mount Everest, Nanda Devi (single peaks: zero)
- the USA, the UK, the UAE, the Netherlands, the Philippines — but India, Nepal, France
Use 4
Institutions and meals — zero
Purpose-visits and meal names travel bare.
- He goes to office at nine and returns home by eight. (note: home never takes ‘to’ either)
- The kids are at school; Papa is at work.
- We had lunch at the site and dinner at home.
- But: The wedding lunch was at a five-star hotel. (specific event meal article returns)
Use 5
Special powers of THE
Groups as a class, instruments, decades, and family-name plurals.
- The rich are buying land; the poor are renting. (the + adjective = the whole group)
- She plays the tabla and the harmonium. (instruments take the)
- Property boomed in the 2000s.
- The Sharmas are our oldest clients. (the + surname + s = the family)
No article = purpose · THE = building
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
तीसरा रास्ता: कोई article नहीं — zero। आम बात (general) हो तो कुछ मत लगाओ:
पानी क़ीमती है Water is precious. ज़मीन कभी धोखा नहीं देती Land never betrays.
नाम ज़्यादातर ख़ाली चलते हैं: India, Ghaziabad, Hindi, Diwali — कोई the नहीं। ‘the India’ सुनते ही ग़लती पकड़ो।
पर नदियाँ, समुद्र, पर्वत-श्रृंखलाएँ the लेती हैं: the Ganga, the Himalayas। और जिन देशों के नाम में Republic/States/plural है: the USA, the UAE, the Netherlands।
Institution का खेल मक़सद बनाम इमारत का है: बच्चा school गया (पढ़ने) went to school; मैं school गया (principal से मिलने, इमारत में) went to THE school।
और home की double छूट: न article, न to — घर गया went home (न ‘to home’, न ‘the home’)।
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right

Life is a struggle.
Abstract general nouns travel bare — life, love, time, money, honesty.

He returned home at 9.
Home: no article, no ‘to’ — and ‘returned back’ is a double (return already means back).
She is in the hospital for her check-up... I mean, admitted as a patient.
She is in hospital. (patient) / She is in the hospital. (visiting the building)
Purpose zero; building the. The pair changes the meaning.
He has been to the USA, the France, and the Japan.
He has been to the USA, France, and Japan.
Only special-name countries take the — plain names go bare.
I love the Indian food. (general taste)
I love Indian food.
General category zero. (THE Indian food at that wedding = specific the returns.)
She plays sitar beautifully.
She plays the sitar beautifully.
Musical instruments take the. (But sports go bare: plays cricket.)
Step 5
Signal Words
Zero-article territory:
General plurals/uncountables: prices, water, land, honesty zero
Names: people, cities, states, plain countries, languages, festivals, months, subjects zero
Purpose institutions: school, college, work, office, home, bed, jail, court, temple zero
Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and sports (cricket, chess) zero
THE’s reserved seats: rivers, seas, ranges, deserts, the USA/UAE/UK, the + adjective groups, instruments, decades, the + family name + s
