The Complete Conditionals Map

Every conditional and wish pattern from this module, on one page.

Zero (Present Real)If + present, presentअगर... तो (हर बार)If you heat ice, it melts.
First (Future Real)If + present, will + V1अगर... तो (होगा)If he agrees, we will sign.
Second (Present Unreal)If + past/were, would + V1अगर... होता, तो ...ताIf I had money, I would invest.
Past RealIf + past, pastअगर... था, तो ...ता थाIf it rained, the basement flooded.
Third (Past Unreal)If + had V3, would have V3अगर... होता, तो ...चुका होताIf I had known, I would have come.
Future UnrealIf + past / were to, would + V1अगर कभी... हो जाएIf he were to resign, work would stall.
Mixed: past presentIf + had V3, would + V1तब... होता, तो आज... होताIf I had saved, I would own a flat now.
Mixed: present pastIf + past/were, would have V3अगर... होता, तो उस दिन...If he were honest, he would have admitted it.
Wish (present)wish + past / wereकाश... होताI wish I had a bigger office.
Wish (past regret)wish + had + V3काश... लिया होताI wish I had bought that plot.
Wish (change/annoyance)wish + would + V1काश... कर देI wish he would pay on time.
Five rules that solve most conditional confusion:
  1. Will and would NEVER enter the if-clause. The condition takes a simple tense; will/would live in the result.
  2. Unreal = one step back in time. Present ideas past tense; past ideas past perfect.
  3. Unreal ‘be’ is WERE for every subject: if I were, if she were, I wish it were.
  4. In mixed conditionals, each clause carries its own time — read ‘now/today’ vs. ‘that day/last year’.
  5. Unless already contains ‘not’. Hope = still realistic; wish = contrary to reality.
